Game Design Workshop

Prototype and playtest one meaningful game loop.

For design students, early-career designers and practitioners building a more deliberate process. Use individually or in a facilitated workshop. The example is illustrative; adapt the method to your context.

Work through the activity

01 · Define the experience

Name the players, setting, session length and intended experience. Describe a meaningful choice the game should create.

02 · Write the core loop

Map player action, system feedback, consequence and the next choice. State the goal and what changes over repeated turns.

03 · Draft rules and balance

Specify resources, constraints, win or end conditions and edge cases. Identify how a new player learns and what could create unfair advantage.

04 · Build a low-cost prototype

Use paper, cards, tokens or a simple digital mock-up. Build only what is needed to test the core choice and progression.

05 · Observe a playtest

Ask players to explain their options. Record rule confusion, meaningful decisions, stalled moments and unintended strategies. Change one rule and test again.

Worked example

Illustrative workshop example: a paper resource-sharing game reveals that one strategy always wins. The designer changes the cost of a repeated action and observes another round.

Your first 15 minutes

Create one paper turn with a choice, feedback and a consequence.

Come back in seven days

Once you have the worksheet, bring what you made and what happened. Review your evidence, record one change, and choose your next exercise.
