Teaching design through decisions, not decoration.

Students improve faster when they can explain why they made a choice, not just show what they made.

Editorial diagram of a visible learning loop: sprint, make, narrate, critique.

01

Studio traditions are lagging industry

Design education still rewards polish. Industry now asks for systems, AI literacy, and the ability to defend a decision under constraint. The classroom has to catch up without becoming a tool tutorial.

02

The critique is the curriculum

Each module is a sprint. Deliverables are held to a production bar. Students learn to narrate tradeoffs: what they cut, what they kept, and what evidence moved the call.

Learning loop as four editorial steps around a critique.

Framework

Visible Learning Loop

Students improve faster when they can explain why they made a choice.

  1. 01

    Sprint

A module with a production bar, not a tool tutorial.

  2. 02

    Make

    Deliver the work under constraint.

  3. 03

    Narrate

What they cut, what they kept, what evidence moved the call.

  4. 04

    Critique

    The critique is the curriculum.

Takeaway

Run the module as a sprint. Hold a production bar. Make the trade-off the thing students must say out loud.
